We had a fantastic day on Saturday the 7th March at Tapton school with around 300 people coming to have fun at Astroday.  Some great talks from local Astronomical "celebrities", a planetarium dome and a Mars Rover which you could drive yourself were just some of the many attractions. 

Thanks to everyone who turned up for a cloudy StarNight. We managed to grab a glimpse of Sirius, just. We all heading indoors for a really interesting evening and a nice hot drink. We talked about the different stars, imaging planets and took some images with our new 3D webcam.

In order to see these images you will need a pair or red-cyan glasses. These are available at out meeting for only 50p each.

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 was officially opened in Sheffield this evening by the society's President, surrounded by a large number of visitors to the society's first IYA event of the year.  The visitors were treated to an introductory video supplied by the official IYA group followed by a fascinating sky tour inside the main Mayfield building using Stellarium, as the sky was clouded over.  Several laptops were available for exploring this software and much tea was drunk as the SAS committee chatted with the many visitors.
